Club Meeting October 31
The Capitol Woodcarvers meeting on October 31 was lightly attended because of the holiday, but featured yummy snacks thanks to Everett Koontz, Dave Hunter, and Laurie Ladd and a Show and Tell featuring a cross section of club talents. Lots of ornaments were collected for the ornament sale and everyone left the wood draw with as much wood as they could carry. But the real highlight of the evening was the program.
Barbara Millikan gave a fascinating presentation on how to successfully get published in magazines such as Woodcarving Illustrated.
First and foremost she advised to research the publication, their submission guidelines, and their rules. Then she said to send in a query as to whether they would be interested in your project or article. This step is somewhat time sensitive if your project is seasonal. At this stage you must be patient, as it often takes weeks for the publication to respond.
Barbara explained the three types of articles: Step by step, Pattern Profile, and Feature. She had excellent handouts on sample formats, publication guidelines, and photographing ones artwork. Next she talked about the text; how to make it clear, brief, and interesting. She emphasized following the publication’s rules. If they ask for 50 words, don’t give them 75. Her experience working for the Statesman Journal helped her understand layout, but she also told us of her trial and error in her first article.
After that, Barbara talked about photographing her first article and her thinking process as she worked. She stressed the importance of resolution, lighting and background.
Finally, Barbara took many questions from the audience, and emphasized her willingness to help anyone from the club who wishes to try publishing an article.
