News From April 26 Club Meeting @ Apr 27 2016

There was a good turnout at the Club meeting last evening. And once again the treats were excellent. Thank you to all who provided the wonderful goodies.

Please remember that the 2016 Rendezvous is fast approaching. If you have not registered for a class please do so soon. The classes are quickly filling up.

The Club will be looking for volunteers to help out with the Marion County Fair coming up in July. If you can contribute any time to man the Club booth please let Jack Dalton know.

State Fair management has been handed over to a private enterprise and we are feeling the effect. The club has in the past leased a 10x20 space in the Artisan's Village to promote woodcarving and to allow members to sell carvings if they wished to do so. The new Fair management has raised the cost of space in the Artisan's Village by more than double to $1000. Club members voted at our meeting not to participate in the Artisan's Village this year due to the increased cost. The Club will have an inside booth for a couple of days during the Fair, dates to be announced. Volunteers will be needed to man this booth.

Donna Miller conducted an excellent demonstration of how to paint shadows and hi-lights on carvings. She started her demo with a flat 2D drawing which after her demo looked truely 3D. Her technique is based on using three values of the same color to acieve shadows and hi-lights. Thank you Donna for this very informative demonstration.

It was announced at the meeting that our Featured Carver for the 2017 Club Show will be Ken Lake. Ken is a very talented carver and wood turner. His chip carving is always of exceptional quality. Ken is an active member of the Club and he will again this year be conducting a chip carving class at the Oregon Rendezvous. The club is fortuneate to have such talented carvers as Ken as long time members. We are looking forward to seeing Ken's many carvings at the show.

Dave Disselbrett has a box of heart blocks waiting to be carved. These carvings will be donated to the Respite Program at the Center 50+. The Respite members will paint then sell the carved hearts as a fund raiser. Please see Dave for a block if you would like to participate in this very worthwhile project. Carved hearts should be returned to Dave by the September meeting.
